Taipei / Taipei Story House
Taipei Story HouseFormerly known as Yuanshan Villa, the Taipei Story House is located right next to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Zhongshan District of Taipei City, Taiwan. The villa is also known as the “fairytale cream house” for its extraordinary yellow-creamy look. The Taipei Story House was built by Chen, Chao-chun, a prominent tea merchant who was the founding President of Dadaocheng Tea Merchant Association.
Established during the period of the Japanese colonial period in 1914 when the Japanese government was in the stage of transforming Taipei into the financial and cultural center of Taiwan, the villa served as a reception venue and a meeting place for the Taipei’s local gentry, Japanese officials, tea merchants, as well as foreign guests. It is also believed that both Sun, Yat-sen and Hu Han-min once visited the villa during their stay in Taiwan.
The Taipei Story House is a 2-storey English Tudor-style architecture designed by both British and the famous Japanese architect –Kondo Shiro, who has also designed a number of great architectures in Taiwan such as the Red House in Ximending, Keelung Post Office, Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, the old National Taiwan University Hospital, Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei and many more that are classified as important heritages of Taiwan. The first floor of the building is comprised of bricks, while the second floor is fashioned in wood. The house is a beautiful blend of Western and Chinese features including fireplaces, hanging lanterns, mini-pagoda-like staircase, and tiles with floral patterns that are rarely seen in other historical buildings in Taiwan.
After the retrocession of Taiwan in 1945, Taipei Story House had several missions. It was the residence of Huang, Kuo-shu - the former President of the Legislative Yuan, an art gallery managed by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1979, and also served as an artist activity center in 1990 until 1998, when it officially classified as a historic site and temporarily closed for renovation to its original grandeur.
This beautiful villa also took part of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition (2010/11/06-2011-04/25). During the expo period, Taipei Story House hosted lifestyle of the wealthy merchant class during the Japanese colonial period, including a large collection of important artifacts, and workshops related to the Expo.
Today, the Taipei Story House is the home to a wide collection of old photos, music records, audiovisual artifacts that tells an old time story of Taipei. The villa also hosts exhibitions, concerts, music recitals and many other events from time to time, giving great opportunities for visitors to experience riding on a time machine back to old Taipei in the 1990s.
