Red House Ximending
Located in the lively Ximending area in Taipei, Taiwan, the Red House Ximending is a western-style red-brick octagonal architecture that was established in 1908. It is the first public market in Taiwan, which is now the most well-preserved tier-three historical site of Taiwan. The Red House Ximending was the center of entertainment among Japanese during the Japanese colonial period and also noted as an important entertaining sector in Eastern Asia. After the retrocession of Taiwan, large number of immigrants from China settled in Taiwan with the KMT government, which marked the glorious history of the Red House Theater. The Red House Theatre had all kinds of performances, including dramas, talk shows, and operas that comfort the hearts of these immigrants. The Cruciform Building burned down once in 2000, and the post-disaster development turned over a new leaf for the Red House. In 2002, Paperwindmill Arts Foundation worked together with other performers and groups for the restoration of the Red House Theater to bring back the vibrant scenes and joyful atmosphere of the place. Today, the Red House Ximending is operated and managed by the Taipei Culture Foundation.
The Red House Ximending is creatively designed by Kondo Juro with an extinctive architectural design that features an octagonal- 8 trigrams (Bagua) building and a cruciform shape at the market entrance. The Red House is comprised of Octagon Building, Cruciform Building, and the South and North Squares nearby. Transformed by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Red House Ximending now serves as the center of artists and designers.
