Kaohsiung Geography

Located at the south of Taiwan, Kaohsiung City faces the Taiwan Strait of its west and Bashi Channel of its south. Due to the geographical advantage, the city is regarded as an important transit port for the Indian Ocean and Navigation Center of Northeast Asia. With the flat terrain, the city is filled with plains and apart from a few isolated hills.

Downtown in Kaohsiung

Situated to the east of Love River and Kaohsiung Harbor is the Kaohsiung downtown area. You cannot image how rural the Kaohsiung downtown was at the very beginning of development. The city covered with all fields and farmland is now a modern city divided into Sanmin, Hsinhsing, Chienchin, Lingya, and Chienchen administrative districts. History

Many historical documents record Kaohsiung was referred to the name “Ta-kau” (pronounced in mandarin),which means bamboo forest. Now Kaohsiung is an oceanic and harbor city, also a major metropolis and heavy industry city of Taiwan. Facing the Taiwan Strait to the west, the maritime city is famous for its hospitality and great climate, with its fine natural harbor, Kaohsiung is growing as a second-largest city.
The Ching Dynasty established a county government in Kaohsiung in 1661. During 1895 to 1945, the period of Japanese colonial occupation of Taiwan, Kaohsiung was a district, and then a city in 1924. In 1979, the government officially designated Kaohsiung as the second special municipality in Taiwan.

Cultural Kaohsiung

As the second-largest city in Taiwan, the development of Kaohsiung can be traced back to 17 century. Therefore, there are lots of relics and historical buildings for you to explore. The most famous spots in Kaohsiung are the Kaohsiung Cultural Center and Kaohsiung Museum of History. Kaohsiung Cultural Center is the oldest culture organization offers activities of artistic and culture, including exhibition hall for performances and musical concerts. Kaohsiung Museum of History is located on the bank of Love River, the architecture was the City Hall of Kaohsiung in 1938.

Ocean

The ocean is the place you should never miss during your Kaohsiung Travel. The population of Kaohsiung is about 1.51 million. Due to the sea and location, the year-round average temperature is 24.4 degrees Celsius; July is the hottest month and January is the coolest. Kaohsiung is the sixth-largest container harbor in the world, the seaport is the main part of the city; its key industries are shipping, technology, fishery, and of course the seaport. Kaohsiung is much more interesting for leisure and travel not only because of water sports, but also the beautiful coastline. As the importance of wharves, like military and commercial use, the city government transformed many of them for recreational spots. A Blue Highway is also starting here to Kenting, Little Luciao, Lanyu (Orchid Island), and Green Island.
