The day of the Dragon Boat Festival is the day when dragon boat races are held on the rivers and lakes. Also, there are many other traditions, rituals and special foods for this particular festival. There are a number of traditions that Taiwanese follow during the day of the festival, including eating glutinous rice dumplings (Zhongzih), hanging calamus and moxa on the front door, drinking concoctions, hanging portraits of Zhong Kuei, children carrying fragrant sachets, as well as trying to stand an egg at 12:00 noon.
The Dragon Boat Festival is highlighted by the dragon boat races, which was originally meant to rescue Qu Yuan - the patriotic poet of Zhou Dynasty. Today, dragon boat races have transformed to a celebration held in many Taiwan cities include Taipei, Yilan, Lukang, Kaohsiung and more.
