Incheon International Airport & Transportation to downtown Seoul
Located 48km (30mi) west of Seoul, Seoul Incheon International Airport is South Korea’s largest airport and also the main hub for Korean Air, Asian Airlines and Polar Air Cargo. It is currently Asia’s eighth busiest airport in terms of passengers and the hub for international civilian air transportation and cargo traffic in East Asia. For international travelers, the Airport Railroad Express (AREX) subway lines, airport limousine buses, and taxis are the major transportation links connecting travelers from the airport to downtown Seoul. The AREX is comprises of two lines: express line and commuter line. The express AREX line offers no stops service which takes about a 43-minute ride, while the commuter line runs parallel to the express line and makes stops at 10 major subway stations en route which takes about 53 minutes to the heart of Seoul. AREX can be taken on B1 of the Airport Transportation Center, available from 07:00-19:00 daily.
Money
Won (W) is the unit of currency of South Korea, with W10, W50, W100 and W500 coins, and W1000, W5000, and W10000 notes. Travelers may do a foreign-exchange at one of the banks in Seoul and licensed moneychangers particularly in Itaewon. The licensed moneychangers in Seoul usually have longer hours than the banks and provide a faster service but may only exchange cash.
Getting around
Subway
Subway is probably the easiest way for travelers to travel around as most places in Seoul can be reached by using the subway. Currently, there are12 subway lines serving Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi province, western Gangwon pronvince and northern Chungnam Province, all distinguished by different colors with both Korean and English signs. The comprehensive subway network interconnects every district of the city and the surrounding areas.
Train
Seoul is connected to other Korean destinations by rail and major cities by the KTX high-speed rail.
Bus
Operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul’s bus system serves most of the city with many large intercity/express bus terminals. These buses connect Seoul with other South Korean cities. The major bus terminals include the Seoul Express Bus Terminal, Central City Terminal and Seoul Nambu Terminal are located in Seocho-gu district.
Taxi
Regular taxis offer a good deal with a cheaper fare than the bus or subway for three people making a short trip. Regular taxis cost W1900 for the first 2km and then W100 for every 144m or 41 seconds afterwards. A 20% surcharge is to be charged between midnight and 4am. Only a few drivers in Seoul can speak English, but some taxis feature a free interpretation service that an interpreter will translate your conversation to the taxi driver in Korea when you speak on the phone in English to them.
